Our Weekly Menu: August 8-14, 2010

I think it's universally known that when you plan your meals out and then go shopping with a list based on that plan, you save time and money. I often loosely plan out the week's meals, but lately, I've been more strict about when we'll eat which meal because local fresh produce just doesn't last as long as grocery store produce. If I'm not careful, I go crazy at the farmer's market, and then half of the food goes to waste because I don't use it fast enough. I'll be posting our weekly meal plan here, partly so you can see what we do with our produce/meat, but also to keep me accountable! Whenever possible, I'll link to the recipe and come back to make notes on how we stuck to the menu.

This week's menu is a little strange since my husband will be out of town and I'd like to use up what's in the fridge (and also because I asked for my four-year-old daughter's input this week!).

(Peas, bell pepper and tomato from CSA/farmer's market)

How long on average does it take you to plan a week's worth of daily meals? I've seen my mother-in-law doing it and have read it's very useful, but I worry being in school that I won't have time often enough. (Plus, I'm indecisive, so I worry I'll get to that night and not want it anymore.)

Victoria, it doesn't take me long, maybe 15 minutes or so? I've just started the strict menu, and I've learned that I have to be a little flexible. I've always planned ahead of time a list of meals for the week, but never assigned a day to leave me some room for flexibility, but I'm trying this out because with two little kids and a full-time job, it pays to be super organized, even if I have to eat something one night that I'd prefer to put off. Right now, I'm planning meals around what meats I have in the freezer (since we buy in bulk from local farmers), what veggies I pick up at the farmer's market/CSA, and what the weather will be like. Making even a tentative menu will save you time in the grocery store too (and save you money!) Let me know if you try it and how it works for you...

I actually went ahead today and made out a tentative menu, beginning with the 19th for when we move in. I have to say, it did make creating a shopping list very easy for me. That excites me because I was feeling a bit overwhelmed, since as a new couple we need everything, down to flour sugar and butter. I focused on recipes that I knew we both liked and that contained many ingredients that I knew we would need in the future (olive oil, for instance) and that could cross between the meals, to save us money (cheddar cheese for both cheeseburgers and delicious tomato grilled cheese). I'm also hoping planning ahead means I can convince my parents to buy it for us when they're moving us in. ;) We'll see how it goes!

(Also, as a side note, Ian's fettuccine alfredo is on that first week's list - it looks too simple and delicious not to try.)
